Historical NotesThese wristbands/bracelets were sold to the public to show support of Mayor Bob O'Connor's battle with central nervous system lymphoma. The wristbands became very popular: 5,000 were sold within 24 hours, creating a call from Pittsburghers to produce more. Originally, the Fraternal Association of Professional Paramedics had a small number made for the Mayor's family; when Judy O'Connor, his wife, was seen on television wearing one, the demand was immediate. Proceeds from the sales benefited local patients of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The cost of each wristband was $2. Mayor Bob O'Connor passed away on September 1, 2006.
