DescriptionBlack beaver fur muff. Center lined with black satin. Attached to one open end is a plastic loop.Dimensions7.5 x 13 x 9 in. (19.1 x 33 x 22.9 cm)Historical NotesThis muff belonged to Charles Orton who patented and made cough drops under the Double X name, which he then sold on the streets of Pittsburgh. Orton, who sold his cough drops by the courthouse downtown, wore a signature beaver skin hat, coat, and muff and stood next to a stand advertising and selling his Double X drops. The donor is Orton's great grandson and he retained the hat, muff, and stamp, but not the stand or coat. Orton is still listed in the phone book in 1919 advertising his cough drops.
