Historical NotesThis immigration reform sign was used during the Labor Day immigration rallies. The sign was colored by Arduro Monzon, the six-year-old son of Federico Monzon and Nathalie Folch, and made at St. Hyacinth Church in Oakland, on the morning of the rallies. The Labor Day immigration rallies were held on May 1, 2006, at several Pittsburgh places: St. Hyacinth Church in Oakland; in front of the Allegheny County Jail (3pm); and finally at Senator Arlen Specter's office (5pm). The main issue that prompted the rallies was the passing of a bill by the House of Representatives that made it a crime to assist any undocumented immigrant in any way.Label TextIn 2006, millions of Americans around the country protested proposed anti-immigrant legislation that would classify undocumented immigrants and anyone who assisted them as felons. In Pittsburgh, local immigrants and their supporters also organized public protests of the legislation and called for immigration reform. Six-year-old Arduro Monzon – a Mexican American – carried this sign in a protest in front of Saint Hyacinth Church in Oakland.
