Historical NotesThis typewriter belonged to Myron Cope and was used at the beginning of his career. Label TextIn the great pantheon of Pittsburgh sports broadcasters, Myron Cope has stood apart. For 35 years, Steelers fans counted on him to deliver the game in his unique way. He conquered print, radio, and television, getting the story and telling it in a creative way. Born in Pittsburgh in 1929, Cope graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School and the University of Pittsburgh. He began his career as a journalist with the Erie Times. In 1951, he moved to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and eventually began covering sports. Recognition followed and Cope began to branch out as a special contributor to Sports Illustrated and a freelance writer for others. In 1968 Cope took to the airwaves, doing a 5-minute sports show during morning drive time. When the Steelers moved from KDKA to WTAE in 1970, they pegged Cope as their voice. He created a sound all his own, marked by witty give and take with his on-air partners, as well as the use of unique catchphrases and tell-it-like-it-is honesty. Cope’s voice often serves as a soundtrack for the Super Bowl moments of the 1970s.
