Historical NotesCynthia Cooley is widely known for her city views of Pittsburgh as well as industrial sites. This painting depicts a working furnace at the PPG Industries Glass Plant in Meadville, Pa.Label TextAfter visiting the PPG Industries float glass factory in Meadville, Cooley documented the flames and fire of the glasshouse furnace in this work. Using vibrant yellows and oranges, the artist illustrated the searing 2,500 degree heat needed to transform sand, ash, and lime into the molten mass from which glass is formed. Widely known for her cityscapes and industrial images, Cooley documents the contemporary look and life of the region.
