Label TextMade out of heavy iron, flat irons were used for smoothing clothes. The hollow base iron on the left was made heavier and warmer by placing slugs, heated over the stove, into the base. The iron on the right, also known as a “sadiron,” has a solid iron base, and was heated by placing it directly on a hot stove, and had to be reheated periodically. The terminology “sad” was a corruption of the word “solid.”
