Historical NotesPittsburgh Phantoms practice jersey. The Pittsburgh Phantoms were a professional roller hockey team created by Howard Baldwin in 1994. Sharing space with the Pittsburgh Penguins at Pittsburgh Civic Arena, the Phantoms played for one year as part of Roller Hockey International (now defunct). They played 22 regular season games with a 13-9 record and a second place finish for the division. Goaltender Erin Whitten became the first woman to play a professional hockey game in Pittsburgh. However, the Phantoms averaged 700 fans fewer per game than other roller hockey teams and folded after one season. This item demonstrates how the regional sports industry attempts to find alternate funding sources and increase revenue by introducing new ventures in Pittsburgh.
