Hebrew Ladies' Hospital Aid Society
The Hebrew Ladies’ Hospital Aid Society advocated on behalf of Jewish patients at hospitals throughout Pittsburgh and raised funds for the creation of a Jewish hospital in the city. The organization was founded in 1898 by 17 immigrant Jewish women who had come to the Hill District over the preceding two decades from countries throughout Eastern Europe. The organization initially focused on improving care for Jewish patients by providing translation for those who could not speak English, helping with medical bills, arranging kosher meals and organizing home visits from doctors. Eager to combat prejudicial hiring practices among area hospitals, the Hebrew Ladies’ Hospital Aid Society expanded its mission to include the creation of a Jewish hospital and raised $25,000 toward the establishment of the original Montefiore Hospital in 1908. The organization later shortened its name to the Ladies Hospital Aid Society and has continued to provide a combination of health care services and fundraising activities.
