Beth El Congregation of the South Hills

founded 1917
BiographyBeth El Congregation of the South Hills is a Jewish congregation located in Scott Township, Pa. The congregation was founded in the Beechview neighborhood of Pittsburgh in 1917. A small Jewish community developed in Beechview as early as 1915, likely in anticipation of the construction of the Liberty Tunnels. The first Jewish families in the Beechview area included those leaving dense urban neighborhoods such as the Hill District, as well as recent arrivals to the region. The first Jewish institution in the neighborhood was the Beechview Jewish Mothers’ Club, which organized a local religious school. The Club evolved into the Beth El Sisterhood after the congregation became established. Beth El Congregation relocated to suburban Scott Township in the early 1960s.
