DescriptionDark brown painted white plaster sculpture of a male riveter. Full-length figure is represented in three-quarter view facing slightly proper left and gaze is downward toward his proper left hand. Muscular figure is shirtless and wears work gloves, belted pants with cuffed pant legs, and work boots. Figure holds a riveting gun in his hands diagonally across his body. Figure stands atop two-level base with proper left leg stepping on higher portion of base; front of base has five hemispherical faux-rivets; base is five-sided.DimensionsHeight x Width x Depth: 44 × 18 × 18 in. Historical NotesStudy for "The Riveter" by Charles Bradley Warren. Charles Bradley Warren worked in the Pittsburgh area from the mid-1930s until the 1960s. Among his works are the Fort Duquesne marker at Point State Park, capitals for the Frick Fine Arts Museum, and bas reliefs for several schools (Stevens Elementary and Prospect Union, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places). Warren, born in 1903 and raised in Ben Avon, studied engineering at Carnegie Institute of Technology, but his interest in sculpture led him to seek a degree at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in New York. He went on to become a prominent sculptor in the Pittsburgh area and beyond. His style often used allegorical figures to represent the purpose of the building it was displayed on. In addition to his sculptures on buildings, he also did some free-standing stone murals. He was a founder of the Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors, which had its first annual show in 1935, and a member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh. He died in 1967 at the age of 63.
