Historical NotesJohn Forbes Kerry (born December 11, 1943) is currently serving his fourth term as the junior United States Senator from Massachusetts. As the Presidential nominee of the Democratic Party, he was defeated in the 2004 presidential election by the Republican incumbent President George W. Bush. He is married to Teresa Simões-Ferreira Heinz, the widow of Pennsylvania Senator H. John Heinz III. They were introduced to each other by John Heinz at an Earth Day rally in 1990 and did not meet again until the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, after John Heinz's death. They married on May 26, 1995, in Nantucket. John Kerry's stepsons and Teresa's three sons from her previous marriage are H. John Heinz IV, André Heinz, and Christopher Heinz, who was married to Alexandra DeRuyter Lewis on February 10, 2007.
