Historical NotesPart of a collection that documents the championship powerboat racing career of Chuck Young. In 1956, Young began racing, first the family runabout, then the hydroplane that took him to a national Class A Pro championship in 1963. After racing for 40 years, Charles stopped in the mid-1990s and focused on collecting vintage boating equipment and supporting outboard organizations and events.Label TextCut from heavy stock paper from the Dravo barge shop, this pattern is one of many Dorothy Young used in making the hydroplane P-3. From dining room to 60 mph! Charles Young’s championship Class A hydroplane (P-3) got its start in the family dining room. His mother, Dorothy Young, constructed the racing hull from pre-ordered plans and 7mm 5-ply African mahogany plywood. She eventually built a total of 22 boats. Skeptics doubted the abilities of a woman to make racing hulls; however, Dorothy and her sons raced the boats to several wins, proving the skeptics wrong.
