Historical NotesMcKennan Pharmacy bottle. The McKennan Pharmacy was named after its founder John T. McKennan who started the pharmacy in 1861 and in the 1870s was involved in starting the first pharmacy program at what would become the University of Pittsburgh. It seems his pharmacy was first located on Market Street, but by 1915 there is a McKennan Pharmacy on Penn Avenue downtown and in the 1960s it was in the North Hills. The McKennan Pharmacy has been called the first professional pharmacy in Pittsburgh. Their advertisements stated, "Prescriptions, Purveyors to Physicians and their patients only. We do not sell Patent Medicines, Tobaccos, Soda Water or Toilet Articles. All Biologicals, Vaccines, Serums, Ferments, etc. are kept under refrigeration."
