Historical NotesYard sign of B-PEP voting campaign. The Black Political Empowerment Project (B-PEP), was born out of disappointment with the absence of Blacks on the City Council of Pittsburgh in the mid-1980s. Launched on May 21, 1986, B-Pep also launched the Greater Pittsburgh Coalition Against Violence (CAV) and the Corporate Equity and Inclusion Roundtable (CEIR). It advocates for voter registration, cultural, civil, and economic rights in Pittsburgh. The yard sign is indicative of the type of voter advocacy from B-PEP for every election in Greater Pittsburgh. Founded by Tim Stevens, a former chair of the Pittsburgh Branch of the NAACP, B-PEP has assumed some of the mantel as the lead advocate for civil rights in Allegheny County.
