Historical NotesPart of a collection of pottery and jewelry made by the Purinton Pottery Company representing various shapes and patterns. Bernard S. Purinton started the Purinton Pottery Company in 1936 in Wellsville, Ohio. The pottery specialized in hand painted slipware. In 1941, they moved to Shippenville, Pennsylvania, and in 1948, due to postwar demand for domestic pottery, opened another factory in Tionesta, Pennsylvania. The pottery was sold throughout North America and in some parts of Central America and Africa. They greatly increased their product lines after the move to Shippenville. Bernard S. Purinton had grown up in East Liverpool, Ohio, a center of the domestic pottery industry and gone to school for ceramics. After developing a new casting methods, he decided to go into business for himself and opened Purinton. They focused on "Peasant Ware" at first as there was a great demand for primitive decorative ware in the late 1930s. Bernard began to look for a place to expand and build a new factory and the Clarion County Chamber of Commerce learned of his plan and worked with him to find a suitable location in their county. On December 7, 1941, the first finished products were produced at the Shippenville plant, yellow teapots. Bernard's wife, Dorothy, and her brother William Blair oversaw the hand decorations applied to the slipware. By the early 1950s, pottery imports were negatively impacting the domestic market. The Tionesta plant closed in 1953 in response to the decreased demand. The company was bought by Taylor Smith Taylor in 1958 and run as a subsidiary for a year before permanently closing in 1959.
