DescriptionOff-white candle with burgundy coloring in a metal candle holder. Off-white candle has carved designs on the sides with burgundy shading along the edges of the designs. Designs include scrollwork and animals such as a bird and a frog. Candle has been burned and edges are blackened, uneven in height, and folding in toward center of candle; wick is burnt. Bottom of candle has a white, circular sticker with a black border and directions for burning the candle. Half torn, yellowed sticker partially overlaid on top of other one; sticker has red and black text with a partial barcode. Metal candle holder has a circular base and a partial side that features the outlines of five people dancing under a moon and stars design. Half of base with no side has a raised lip with a textured surface and small, circular indents. Side of candle holder has textured and pitted outline with both pressed and raised stars throughout; raised stars have blue, plastic stones in the middle. Crescent moon at the very top. Historical NotesThe Jewish Women’s Center of Pittsburgh was an educational and spiritual center for Jewish women in Pittsburgh. As described in its mission statement, it was "a community of women of all backgrounds that provides educational opportunities and spiritual experiences rooted in Jewish values and feminist ideals." The Jewish Women’s Center of Pittsburgh used this candle as part of its monthly Rosh Hodesh, which is a celebration of the beginning of every month. It celebrates the new moon which is barely visible and a crescent shape. The celebrations were the flagship event of the center, starting in 1992.
