Label TextFrank Cruikshank, Sr. (1859-1933), by A.F. King, oil on canvas, 1934 Cruikshank began his career in food production in his father’s grocery store in Allegheny City (today Pittsburgh’s North Side), where he and his mother turned unsold fruits and vegetables into preserves. These homemade products became so popular that, in 1879, he and two brothers founded Cruikshank Brothers Company, a manufacturer of jams, jellies, and condiments. By 1915, the company’s success led to the construction of a 116,000-square-foot warehouse in the North Side. A decade later, products under the brand name “Crubro” were distributed nationwide. Frank Cruikshank led the company until his death in 1933, and the business continued to operate until 1956.
