Historical NotesHurling ball from the semi-final game of the 2023 U.S. National Collegiate Gaelic Athletic Association hurling championship tournament. University of Pittsburgh played Catholic University and won. University of Pittsburgh hurling team won the U.S. National Collegiate Gaelic Athletic Association hurling championship in 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023. Label TextThough hurling’s roots date back 3,000 years to ancient Gaelic and Irish origins, it has only recently been played competitively in this region. Overseen by the Pittsburgh Gaelic Athletic Association, a men’s team, the Pucas, formed in 2007 and a woman’s team, Na Laochra Camogie, started in 2021. Both have captured Midwest championships; the men won a national USGAA Championship in 2022, and the women won a Junior B National Championship in camogie (a variant of hurling played by women) in 2023. The University of Pittsburgh’s Club team racked up an astounding four consecutive National Collegiate GAA championships between 2019 and 2023.
