Historical NotesCampaign t-shirt from 1985 Court of Common Pleas run. One of Rochelle S. Friedman’s opponents during that campaign was Judith Friedman which caused a lot of name confusion in an already confusing race that included 28 candidates. So, Shelly and her team created the cheeky slogan “Be Sure It’s Shelly Friedman” to battle the name confusion. Rochelle S. Friedman was raised in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She attended Rogers School and the University of Pittsburgh for both undergraduate and law school. Friedman served as a judicial law clerk to Judge James R. McGregor of the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County and as solicitor to Robert N. Peirce, Clerk of Courts of Allegheny County. After three failed attempts at running for the Court of Common Pleas, she won a seat on the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania and served from 1992 until her retirement in 2016. She was notable for her defense of the first amendment, the rights of women and minorities, and other civil liberties.
