Historical NotesAward ribbon from the Stoop N' Bend Garden Club. The Stoop N’ Bend Garden Club was the first African American women’s gardening club in Pittsburgh. The club was founded on July 20, 1940 by Aluvia Waters, usually referred to as Mrs. Charles J. Waters, Jr., at the Phipps Garden Center, formerly the Pittsburgh Civic Garden Center, to “stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening.” Mrs. Waters was president of the Stoop N’ Bend for its first eight years. A club member’s husband gave the club its name, saying that when his wife worked in her garden she was always stooping and bending. In its early days Stoop N’ Bend was an organization where African American women could learn gardening tips from each other, plan events for the community, and provide a social outlet for club members. Through its history, the club sent gifts to people in need, provided flowers for veterans’ hospitals, planted gardens in new areas of Pittsburgh, volunteered with local children, and helped businesses develop their gardens. Stoop N’ Bend’s founding motto was, “We pass this way but once, let us beautify the way we go, so the world may know which way we went.”
