Historical NotesBronze Star awarded to Bernard Halpern for his service in World War II. Bernard Halpern was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from Harvard Law School in 1942. He briefly taught Naval Law at Quantico before requesting transfer to active duty. He was part of the second wave of assault to recapture Guam. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his efforts to secure the surrender of Japanese soldiers on the island. He was also involved in negotiating a similar surrender of Japanese soldiers on the nearby island of Truk. The medal was donated by his daughter, Eileen L. Lane.
