Historical NotesAnita DeVivo of the Mahoningtown neighborhood of New Castle, Pennsylvania was a professional editor and publisher that worked on a number of high profile publications, including the Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) and The Chicago Manual of Style. DeVivo was an active Catholic and a member of the choir at the U.S. National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., performing at the funeral of President John F. Kennedy. The palm weavings are also symbolic of DeVivo’s Catholic faith; many Catholics take their palms from the Easter season and weave them into crosses and braids. The palms were found with the prayer book and DeVivo’s collection of prayer cards (accessioned into the archival collection); it is assumed that she wove two of them. The palm woven into the shape of rose was made by Anna Marie Fiore, a local crafter known for her palm weaving talents, among other types of Italian crafts.
