Historical NotesJackie Hernández, Kansas City Royals shortstop born in Cuba in 1940/died in 2019, was traded with Jim Campanis and Bob Johnson to the Pirates for Bruce Dal Canton, Jerry May, and Freddie Patek on December 2, 1970. 1971 Topps cards show photos and stats from the 1970 season and thus portray Hernández with the Royals. O-Pee-Chee (also abbreviated OPC) are a similarly styled card printed by Topps but printed in Canada for Canadians, with English and French text. Printed after the early spring Topps run, these OPC cards sometimes reflect trades which were not made until after the Topps printing could cover them- so that “recently traded” lines appear on the card and the new team (Pirates) is printed even though the photo pictures the player in his old uniform (Royals). Jackie Hernández notably fielded the ground ball hit by Oriole Merv Rettenmund and threw to first baseman Bob Robertson for the final out of the 1971 World Series.
