(21 × 252.1 × 3.2 cm)Historical NotesAugers were used to bore holes in the coal seam to insert explosives. The auger rested on a breast brace that rested against a miner's body. After drilling, explosives were inserted to free the coal for loading. In the early 1900s, the dangerous practice was reportedly the cause of numerous mine disasters. This auger belonged to Stephen Toth, Sr. of Whitsett, Pennsylvania. On December 19, 1907, Toth was one of the first rescuers on scene at the Darr Mine disaster.
