There is a photograph of the donor wearing the dress in the HHC Archives (Moir and Marshall Family Papers, L&A Accession 2016.0138). The donor Sara Marshall’s father, William Moir, was born in England and came to America with his mother to care for her parents. He came over on the Lusitania. When he was 17 or 18 he began working for the Pennsylvania railroad in Indiana and transferred to the Pittsburgh region around 1920. The rest of his career he spent in Pittsburgh. He worked for the Central Division and oversaw the construction of rail cars and the movement of large shipments on the railroad. He was responsible for moving the columns for the Mellon Institute to Pittsburgh from Indiana. The rail passes (L&A) were given to him and his children to ride anywhere for free for their lifetime. Also donated was his inspection book (L&A).
