Historical NotesNASA Distinguished Service Medal, NASA’s highest award, awarded to Jay Apt after his fourth Space Shuttle mission. The citation presented to Jay Apt at a ceremony at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., on June 17, 1997 reads: "The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Presents to Jerome Apt the NASA Distinguished Service Medal In recognition of your distinguished contributions to the Nation’s space program as a Mission Specialist aboard Atlantis during the STS-79 mission and as a Mission Specialist on STS-59, STS-47, and STS-37. Signed and sealed at Washington, D.C. this seventeenth day of June Nineteen Hundred and Ninety-Seven s/Daniel S.
