Historical NotesBottle such as these held a pint or two of whiskey and were small enough to be portable. They slipped into coat pockets where the bearer could take a “nip” to quench thirst and fight off the cold and damp. They were often marked with patriotic motifs, such as the faces of famous men or eagles with the stars and bars.
