Historical NotesBanner for the The American Jewish Committee. The American Jewish Committee was founded in 1906 to advocate for the civil liberties of Jews around the world and later expanded its mission to fight against discrimination more broadly. The Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Jewish Committee was formed in 1944 and was one of the original chapters created by the national office to bring the mission of the organization into local communities. After the national office closed several regional branches around 2008, the Pittsburgh chapter re-formed as an independent affiliate called the Pittsburgh Area Jewish Committee. The Pittsburgh Area Jewish Committee disbanded in 2016, citing a desire to avoid duplication of services within the local Jewish community. The local chapter was involved in effort to integrate social clubs in the city and to promote interfaith dialogue among Jewish, Protestant, Catholic and Muslim groups throughout the region.
