Historical NotesTap shoes used by William (Billy) Johnson, Jr. Billy Johnson and his sister, Betty Johnson, started dance lessons in the 1920s with their mother, Mary McCoy Johnson, who operated a dance studio in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. The Johnsons dance duo performed together in Pittsburgh and across the country until 1939. During World War II Billy enlisted in the army as a radio operator. After he returned to the U.S. he continued to dance and taught at the Johnson Dance School with his mother.
