Historical NotesThe aluminum milk pot and ladle are from donor Joseph D'Andrea's childhood home in the village of Roccamandolfi, Italy. He saved the pot as a reminder of life in Italy during WWII. The village milkmaid, who traveled from home to home with her milk, would fill a family’s pot in exchange for money. During the war, the D’Andrea family opened their home to Italian refugees. Mr. D’Andrea recalled a vivid memory of an incident that occurred between a refugee mother and the milkmaid in which an argument transpired and the milkmaid’s entire supply of milk was spilled. The refugee’s infant and young children were forced to go without milk that day and every time Mr. D’Andrea looked at the milk pot thereafter, he would remember the consequences of war. Part of a collection of artifacts donated by first-generation Italian American Joseph D’Andrea that reflects the various activities he was involved in during his illustrious career in Pittsburgh as Consul of Italy, president of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, member of the Board of Directors of the National Education Association, and founder and president of the Italian Cultural Heritage Society.
