Historical NotesChildren's plate from Arsenal Nursery School--now Arsenal Family & Children's Center--in Lawrenceville, PA. Arsenal Nursery School was founded in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh in 1953 by pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock, who designed the school as a training site for pediatric students to study normal child behavior in a stable environment over generations. In 1980, Arsenal Family and Children's Center became a private, non-profit organization; in 2003, it was relocated to Friendship and operates as a developmental preschool and social services agency. It continues to train college and university students in the Pittsburgh community.
