Historical NotesVest jacket worn by Father Donald McIlvane while participating in the first South African post-apartheid elections as a peace observer in 1994. Father McIlvane passed away in February of 2014 after a lifetime of civil rights and social activism in the Pittsburgh area and throughout the country and world. He was motivated by Martin Luther King, Jr., to join the civil rights movement in the 1960s, traveling to Selma, Alabama to join the civil rights march there. There are many images of him in the Teeny Harris Photograph Collection participating in local activism. His family moved here when he was young and he attended Mt. Lebanon High School. He served in the Navy in WWII and then attended St. Vincent Seminary, ordained in 1952.
