Historical NotesThe donor's great aunt, Maria Ann Carey, worked as a live-in seamstress for and a close friend to the Hammel family, owners of Hammel's Restaurant and Cafe in Jenkin's Arcade.Label TextMolded glass beer stein with engraved pewter lid and ceramic plates featuring rams’ heads from Hammel’s Restaurant and Café, a German restaurant once located in the Jenkin’s Arcade Building of downtown Pittsburgh. Hammel’s closed around 1917 because of the heightened anti-German sentiments brought about by World War I. The objects descended to donor Sarah Jane Brown through her aunt, Maria Ann Carey, who worked for the Hammel family as a live-in seamstress.
