Historical NotesLetter jacket belonged to Wayne Mathias who played football for the Crafton Cougars under coach Paul Kmetz. Wayne played all four years and was a starter for three (all except his freshman year). He was a two-way player (both offense and defense) and played halfback on offense. Crafton Cougars were the WPIAL Class B champions, Ohio Valley Conference. During the 1967 season, Crafton went 9-0. The WPIAL Championship game was played on the day before Thanksgiving at Mt. Lebanon High School Field and was televised. Crafton played against South Fayette High School, which was a much larger school. It was a rainy game with lots of mud on the field. Wayne (#44) scored Crafton's only touchdown to tie the game. It was a 15-yard run in the third quarter. Due to the rainy/muddy condition, Crafton's coach did not want to kick the extra point - he wanted to run it. A player was sent into the huddle with those instructions but forgot them as he ran onto the field. The team assumed they were to kick the extra point and lined up to do so, despite the coach's protest on the sideline. Quarterback Ray Marshall (#12) kicked the extra point and made it, giving Crafton a 7-6 lead. South Fayette ran out of time on a final drive and Crafton won, 7-6. Ray Marshall won the Dapper Dan Award that year. Wayne Mathias played one year of college football at Thiel College. After he hurt his knee, he did not play again.
