Historical NotesMountain climbing ice ax used by Will Cross of Pittsburgh during the 2006 NovoLog Peaks and Poles Challenge Mount Everest expedition from March - May 2006. Cross became the first American with type 1 diabetes to summit Mount Everest. An avid climber, Will Cross has scaled the highest mountain on each of the seven continents and trekked to both the North and South Poles, all the while raising awareness and funds for type 1 (formerly juvenile) diabetes. Cross has trained to combat the rigorous physical demands of mountain climbing while managing his own affliction with the disease, which he has faced since age nine.
