Historical NotesLess than a year after Edwin Drake sank his oil well, Charles Lockhart, a Pittsburgh merchant, sailed for England with a few bottles of refined Pennsylvania oil. With orders in hand, Lockhart returned to Pittsburgh and established the first commercial oil refinery that produced “lamp oil” on a large scale.
