Historical NotesRoger O'Mara was a former Chief of the Pittsburgh Police. In 1867 he joined the Pittsburgh Police at age 19 and became a detective in that same year. He resigned from the force in 1902 after 34 years of service, mostly serving as the head of the Detective Bureau. O'Mara became known as the "Shepard of the Black Sheep" from his willingness to help defend people with difficult cases against them, often traveling to other states or countries to do so. Most notably, he was involved in the defense of Harry K. Thaw, who was accused of murdering architect Stanford White in 1906. It would later be called "The Trial of the Century". Part of the Pittsburgh Police Historical Association collection.
