Historical NotesPrinting plate from the Pittsburgh Press featuring John Bain "Jock" Sutherland, famed University of Pittsburgh football player (1915-1916) and coach (1924-1938); he also coached the Pittsburgh Steelers for one year (1946-1947) before dying suddenly in Pittsburgh in 1948. Printing plate is related to donor Elaine Linkenheimer's father, Frank P. Plaven, Sr.’s career as a printer in the composing room of both Sun-Telegraph and the Pittsburgh Press. Plates were found in press at Plaven’s home. The Pittsburgh Press, now defunct, was a major daily newspaper in Pittsburgh. It was one of many competing city newspapers published prior to the World War I including the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. At one time, the Press was the second largest newspaper in Pennsylvania, behind only to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
