Historical NotesThe donor Ellen Bonar Wilt is the granddaughter of Pittsburgh artist James Bonar. This oil painting miniature depicts an industrial scene by Ferdinand Kaufmann. Kaufmann, primarily a landscape and marine painter, was born in Germany in 1864, and moved to Pittsburgh when he was a teenager, but left at times to study art in Paris with Laurens, Bougereau, Constant, and Manet. In 1921, he moved to California where he stayed for the remainder of his life. His work includes scenes from Pittsburgh, PA, harbor scenes from Los Angeles, CA, and Gloucester, MA, and interior valleys, coasts, and the mountains of Southern California.
