DescriptionMetal and ivory tonsillotome tool. Long, thin metal rod with large oval loop at one end and ivory, cross-hatched handle. On one side of the rod is a thin metal lancet with sharp point that can be moved along the rod. An oval blade is recessed in the loop and moved by pulling the handle.Dimensions0.5 x 1 x 8.75 in. (1.3 x 2.5 x 22.2 cm)Historical NotesPart of a collection of medical supplies of Dr. James Glenn Dickson who operated in the Canonsburg area from the 1840s to the 1870s. Donor Melinda Hays Evans’ family found the apothecary chest with accompanying medical supplies in a barn on their property in the Canonsburg area. The collection documents the practice of a mid-19th century small town doctor.
