Historical NotesPittsburgh CAPA was initially housed in the old Baxter Elementary School located in Homewood Brushton in 1903. In September 1979, Baxter School was reopened as a magnet school under the direction of Dr. Harry Clark. The name was changed to The Pittsburgh High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. The school was remodeled and, although enrollment was small, 35 students attended on a part-time basis, it was expected to increase as the programs successfully progressed. By the end of the first year of operation, the total enrollment grew to 75 students. A full-time program began in 1983 with an enrollment of 50 students. The program continued to flourish and now enrolls 500+ full-time students majoring in Dance, Instrumental and Vocal Music, Literary Arts, Theatre, and Visual Arts. Pittsburgh CAPA offers a complete range of studies including mainstream, Pittsburgh Scholars Program (PSP), and Centers for Advanced Study (CAS) along with activities like National Honor Society, Yearbook, Newspaper, Student Council and Ski Club. At the start of the 2003-2004 school year, Pittsburgh CAPA opened a new building located in the Cultural District in downtown Pittsburgh. The building is a world-class facility that includes a 400-seat auditorium, a black box theatre, an art gallery, media arts center, fitness center, computer labs, and special rehearsal spaces for all the departments. Beginning with the 2009-2010 school year, Pittsburgh CAPA High School merged with its sister school, Pittsburgh Rogers CAPA. The middle grades program will now be inclusive with the secondary program to provide the students with the highest level of academic and arts instruction in the region. Albert Fondy was a Pittsburgh Public School teacher who served over thirty-seven years in the leadership of various local and state teachers unions. Fondy was elected to serve fifteen consecutive terms as president of the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers, twelve terms as president of the Pennsylvania Federation of Teachers and was elected vice president of the American Federation of Teachers in 1980.
