Used to create hole for squib to travel through to ignite explosives in coal seams.Label TextThis group of mining tools was used for setting black powder explosives by Peppy and Anthony Shaffer, brothers who worked in several mines in Washington County including the Gilmore Mine. The tools were probably made by a company blacksmith, out of iron and copper, used for the needle and tamper because it is non-sparking and would not accidentally ignite the explosive. The long copper rod attached to an oval iron handle is a squib pin or needle. It created a hole for the squib to travel through to ignite the explosives.
