DescriptionRectangular silk Mexican flag, with vertical green, white, and red sections, bordered by gold fringe on three sides. Green sequins decoration on front. In center is multi-colored vinyl image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, accented with green, gold, white, black, purple, red, and yellow sequins. Four hanging loops at top with plastic pole through all; pole is covered with white silk. Attached to each end of pole are gold tassels and white rope for hanging. Historical NotesMexican flag containing the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Virgin of Guadalupe), the patron saint of Mexico. The flag was made by the donor, Angeles Lopez Portillo Stiteler, by adding the figure and additional decoration to a store-bought flag. From 2004-2006, the flag was used in the December 12 Our Lady of Guadalupe mass celebrations at Saint Hyacinth Church in Pittsburgh. The Saint Hyacinth/Saint Regis Parish serves as the seat of the Hispanic/Latino Catholic Community of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. In 2006, the donor brought the flag to Washington, DC, where it was used in rallies protesting anti-immigration laws being debated by Congress.Label TextAn immigrant from Mexico, Angeles Lopez Portillo Stiteler made this flag depicting the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron Saint of Mexico.
