Historical NotesThis finish is highly unusual, and may have been a non-production piece. Introduced by Phoenix Glass in 1933, the company produced this line of blown molded vases until 1957. Russell Struthers designed the Wild Geese vase from a sketch drawn by Kenneth Haley, who worked at Phoenix from 1928 until 1934. Marketed as part of a line the company called “Sculptured” glass, the pieces feature a smooth background, with a raised figural design. The patterns in this line usually had natural subjects such as birds or flowers. This collection documents 31 different finishes for the Wild Geese vase. Varying the color of the wash on the background or the finish on the geese allowed Phoenix to offer the consumer a choice in the decoration or coloration of the piece they purchased. From one design, the company created a large variety of finished products.
