DescriptionKnife with sheath.
Steel blade knife with nickel-plated handle and black plastic textured grip. Red and black enameled diamond inlaid in the grip with a black swastika on a gold background in the center. Hook-shaped projection on one side of the hand guard. Leather remnant above the hand guard at the bottom of the blade. Engraved on one side of the blade.
Black metal blade sheath with leather strap that has a snap closure at the top.Dimensions(a) 9.625" L, 2" W, 0.625" H(b) 10.25" L, 1.375" W, 1.25" H
InscriptionsEngraved on one side of the blade reads: "Blut und Ehre!" and translates to "Blood and Honor!"
Marks(a) Stamped near hilt of blade is the manufacturer's mark of a squirrel inscribed in an oval that reads around the edge: "CARL EICKHORN / SOLINGEN" Below that reads: GES. GESCHUTZT"

Historical NotesThis Hitler Youth knife was brought back from Europe after WWII by James L. Swauger. James L. Swauger was a western Pennsylvania native who worked at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History before being drafted into the army during World War II. He served with the 796th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion and earned the rank of captain by war's end. After the war, Swauger returned to the Carnegie Museum until his retirement. The Hitler Youth (HJ) was a paramilitary organization of the Nazi Party. It existed from 1926-1945.
