Historical NotesMorgan gantry crane sign from the Jones & Laughlin mill in the South Side. Donor Robert Trakofler's friend was a crane operator in the mill and was the last one there when they closed the mill down. He took the sign with him. The sign originally hung across the girder above the crane. A gantry crane lifts objects by a hoist which is fitted in a hoist trolley and can move horizontally on a rail or pair of rails fitted under a beam. In the mill, it was most likely used to move ore or possibly load it into cars or barges.
