DescriptionCeramic roofing tile or shingle. Unglazed earthenware, press-moulded, pale red-orange color body clay; a long, tall rectangular shape, tapered in thickness at the top; formed ridge, with inverted "U" channel profile on left-hand side, overlaps a narrow standing ridge on right side of adjacent tile, when installed; there is a formed hump or vent, located at bottom center; single nail-hole along top edge for mounting the tile; reverse side is stepped at bottom edge, so that each tile overlaps the one below it.Dimensions8.75 x 1.75 x 13 in. Historical NotesCeramic roofing tile made by the Greensboro Tile Company. Greensboro Tile Company was owned by John Jones and Frank Hamilton, the noted stoneware manufacturers, along with John Campbell, Jackson Moore, and James Hamilton; the factory was located on Diamond Street, in the heart of the pottery district, next to Hamilton and Jones; the tile-making process used a different kind of clay and firing kiln than was used to make stoneware pottery.
