Label TextPittsburgh, Bakewell, Pears & Co., colorless lead glass pressed in the Argus Pattern. The American innovation of pressing technology, introduced in the late 1820’s, revolutionized the glass industry. By 1840, Pittsburgh became the pressed glass capital of the nation. Pressed glass could be made quickly, cheaply, and so each piece looked the same. Popular cut glass motifs, such as the oval, could be replicated in pressed glass, creating beautiful, yet more affordable tableware such as this Argus pattern. The museum has a large collection of pressed glass, which it has collected actively for the past half century.
