Most pillar molded glass, glass with this pronounced vertical ribbing, has been attributed to Pittsburgh makers due to its illustration in McKee and Brothers catalogs of the 1860s. However, we know this type of glass, developed in Roman times, began to be made in England in the 1840s and was also likely produced elsewhere in the United States. The museum has a small collection of this type of glass; the cobalt compote is our only piece in color.
