(0.2 x 12.5 cm)Historical NotesCrocheted doily made by donor Bruna Riccobon's maternal great-aunt, Rosa Parovel Urbanaz. The crocheted piece is evocative of the fine detail found in her needlework and the stylization is similar to other needle-art from Italy. The Riccobon's and their extended family were from Capodistria (now Koper, Slovenia), which was once a part of the Italian province of Trieste. During Bruna Riccobon's childhood she experienced German occupation under Hitler, the Free Territory of Trieste under the Allied government, and a dictatorship under Yugoslavian Partisan Tito. Her father worked as a police officer for the Allied government, which eventually led to the Communist Partisans driving her family from their homestead, like thousands of Italians in the region. The Riccobons lived in army barracks in Trieste from 1948-1951 with other displaced Italians. Her family was transferred to refugee camps in Bagnoli, Italy and Bremerhaven, Germany while awaiting their relocation to Pittsburgh through the National Refugee Organization. This doily was one of the few material possessions that the family was able to bring with them to their new American home.
